The youngster somehow got his hands on a pistol and shot himself in the head while being watched by family friends
A two-year-old has died of a self-inflicted gunshot after shooting himself in the head with a pistol.
The tragic incident happened in Fresno, California on Saturday.
Police told ABC station KFSN that the child was in a bedroom in his house when the accidental shooting happened.
The child's parents were not in the house at the time and the youngster was being looked after by two family friends.
Fresno Police Department Lieutenant Rob Beck said: "At the time that this occurred, there were two adults inside the home with the child. Neither of them are the child's parents."
The force also said it was unclear who owns the gun.
They did not know if it belonged to the child's parents or the friends who were minding him.
Lieutenant Beck added: "You're required to, if you have firearms in the home, they need to be locked and out of reach of children."
Emergency services were called to the scene and the child was taken to hospital but did not survive.
A study released by Pediatrics journal in 2017 found that approximately 1,300 children die every year in the US from a gun-related injury.
